Nahoonai

A Sustainable Aviation Fuel Development in British Columbia

Nahoonai, a name drawn from the Dakelh language in recognition of Cielo’s partnership with the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, is Cielo’s flagship clean fuels project in British Columbia. The project is being developed to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other low-carbon liquid fuels from biomass and biogenic waste feedstocks using commercially proven conversion technology.

A Majority Indigenous-Owned Partnership

Nahoonai is being developed through a Strategic Project Framework Agreement (SPFA) between Cielo and Tano T’enneh Enterprises (TTE), the economic development arm of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation. The partnership establishes a majority Indigenous-owned limited partnership structure to advance the project through development, financing, construction, and operations. This structure reflects a shared commitment to meaningful economic participation, environmental stewardship, and community benefit.
Project

Project Overview

Nahoonai will convert waste-derived feedstocks, including creosote-treated railway ties and other biogenic waste streams, into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The project applies commercially available technologies, selected through Cielo’s technology-independent evaluation process to match feedstock, offtake, and site-specific requirements.

The project is located in Prince George and is positioned to benefit from the province’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), federal Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR), and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Investment Tax Credits. Nahoonai is being advanced through Cielo’s Nexus Platform, leveraging the proprietary data intelligence, and methodologies acquired from Canadian Discovery Ltd.

Powered by the Nexus Platform

The Nexus Platform is Cielo’s proprietary project evaluation and development framework. It combines decades of subsurface, environmental, and energy data with analytical tools and models to support disciplined, repeatable project development decisions. The platform enhances Cielo’s ability to evaluate feedstock sources, technology options, carbon capture and storage potential, and regulatory incentive structures across multiple jurisdictions. Nahoonai is the first project being developed through the Nexus Platform.
Current Status

Project Status

Nahoonai is in the pre-front end engineering and design (Pre-FEED) stage. Cielo and TTE are advancing the project through designs activities, regulatory engagement and financing efforts. The SPFA was announced on March 16, 2026. For the latest updates, please see our News & Media page.
